  10. l2l            That so sweetly were forsworn,

  12. l4l            Lights that do mislead the morn;
  13. l5l            But my kisses bring again, bring again,
  14. l6l            Seals of love, though sealed in vain, sealed in vain.
  15.         (Enter the Duke, disguised as a friar)
  16. l7l    Mariana    Break off thy song, and haste thee quick away.
  17. l8l        Here comes a man of comfort, whose advice
  18. l9l        Hath often stilled my brawling discontent.
  19.         (Exit Boy)
  20. l10l        I cry you mercy, sir, and well could wish
  21. l11l        You had not found me here so musical.
  22. l12l        Let me excuse me, and believe me so:
  23. l13l        My mirth it much displeased, but pleased my woe.
  24. l14l    Duke    ÆTis good; though music oft hath such a charm
  25. l15l        To make bad good, and good provoke to harm.
  26. l16l        I pray you tell me, hath anybody enquired for me here
  27. l17l        today? Much upon this time have I promised here to
  28. l18l        meet.
  29. l19l    Mariana    You have not been enquired after; I have sat
  30. l20l        here all day.
  31.         (Enter Isabella)
  32. l21l    Duke    I do constantly believe you; the time is come even
  33. l22l        now. I shall crave your forbearance a little. Maybe I
  34. l23l        will call upon you anon, for some advantage to yourself.
  35. l24l    Mariana    I am always bound to you.
  36.         (Exit)
  37. l25l    Duke    Very well met, and welcome.
  38. l26l        What is the news from this good deputy?
  39. l27l    Isabella    He hath a garden circummured with brick,
  40. l28l        Whose western side is with a vineyard backed;
  41. l29l        And to that vineyard is a plankΦd gate,
  42. l30l        That makes his opening with this bigger key.

  44. l32l        Which from the vineyard to the garden leads.

  68. l52l    Duke    (to Mariana) Do you persuade yourself that I respect you?
  69. l53l    Mariana    Good friar, I know you do, and so have found it.
  70. l54l    Duke    Take then this your companion by the hand,
  71. l55l        Who hath a story ready for your ear.
  72. l56l        I shall attend your leisure; but make haste,
  73. l57l        The vaporous night approaches.
  74.     Mariana    (to Isabella)                Will Æt please you walk aside?
  75.         (Exeunt Mariana and Isabella)
  76. l58l    Duke    O place and greatness, millions of false eyes
  77. l59l        Are stuck upon thee; volumes of report
  78. l60l        Run with their false and most contrarious quest
  79. l61l        Upon thy doings; thousand escapes of wit
  80. l62l        Make thee the father of their idle dream,
  81. l63l        And rack thee in their fancies.
  82.         (Enter Mariana and Isabella)
  83.                                     Welcome. How agreed?
  84. l64l    Isabella    SheÆll take the enterprise upon her, father,
  85. l65l        If you advise it.
  86.     Duke                    It is not my consent,
  87. l66l        But my entreaty too.
  88.     Isabella    (to Mariana)        Little have you to say
  89. l67l        When you depart from him but, soft and low,

  91.     Mariana                                    Fear me not.
  92. l69l    Duke    Nor, gentle daughter, fear you not at all.
  93. l70l        He is your husband on a pre-contract.
  94. l71l        To bring you thus together Ætis no sin,
  95. l72l        Sith that the justice of your title to him
  96. l73l        Doth flourish the deceit. Come, let us go.
