- MEASURE FOR MEASURE
-
- Act 4 Scene 1
-
- (Mariana discovered with a Boy singing)
- l1l Boy Take, O take those lips away
- l2l That so sweetly were forsworn,
- l3l And those eyes, the break of day
- l4l Lights that do mislead the morn;
- l5l But my kisses bring again, bring again,
- l6l Seals of love, though sealed in vain, sealed in vain.
- (Enter the Duke, disguised as a friar)
- l7l Mariana Break off thy song, and haste thee quick away.
- l8l Here comes a man of comfort, whose advice
- l9l Hath often stilled my brawling discontent.
- (Exit Boy)
- l10l I cry you mercy, sir, and well could wish
- l11l You had not found me here so musical.
- l12l Let me excuse me, and believe me so:
- l13l My mirth it much displeased, but pleased my woe.
- l14l Duke ÆTis good; though music oft hath such a charm
- l15l To make bad good, and good provoke to harm.
- l16l I pray you tell me, hath anybody enquired for me here
- l17l today? Much upon this time have I promised here to
- l18l meet.
- l19l Mariana You have not been enquired after; I have sat
- l20l here all day.
- (Enter Isabella)
- l21l Duke I do constantly believe you; the time is come even
- l22l now. I shall crave your forbearance a little. Maybe I
- l23l will call upon you anon, for some advantage to yourself.
- l24l Mariana I am always bound to you.
- (Exit)
- l25l Duke Very well met, and welcome.
- l26l What is the news from this good deputy?
- l27l Isabella He hath a garden circummured with brick,
- l28l Whose western side is with a vineyard backed;
- l29l And to that vineyard is a plankΦd gate,
- l30l That makes his opening with this bigger key.
- l31l This other doth command a little door
- l32l Which from the vineyard to the garden leads.
- l33l There have I made my promise
- l34l Upon the heavy middle of the night
- l35l To call upon him.
- l36l Duke But shall you on your knowledge find this way?
- l37l Isabella I have taÆen a due and wary note upon Æt.
- l38l With whispering and most guilty diligence,
- l39l In action all of precept, he did show me
- l40l The way twice oÆer.
- Duke Are there no other tokens
- l41l Between you Ægreed concerning her observance?
- l42l Isabella No, none, but only a repair iÆ thÆ dark,
- l43l And that I have possessed him my most stay
- l44l Can be but brief, for I have made him know
- l45l I have a servant comes with me along
- l46l That stays upon me, whose persuasion is
- l47l I come about my brother.
- Duke ÆTis well borne up.
- l48l I have not yet made known to Mariana
- l49l A word of this.ùWhat ho, within! Come forth!
- (Enter Mariana)
- l50l (To Mariana) I pray you be acquainted with this maid.
- l51l She comes to do you good.
- Isabella I do desire the like.
- l52l Duke (to Mariana) Do you persuade yourself that I respect you?
- l53l Mariana Good friar, I know you do, and so have found it.
- l54l Duke Take then this your companion by the hand,
- l55l Who hath a story ready for your ear.
- l56l I shall attend your leisure; but make haste,
- l57l The vaporous night approaches.
- Mariana (to Isabella) Will Æt please you walk aside?
- (Exeunt Mariana and Isabella)
- l58l Duke O place and greatness, millions of false eyes
- l59l Are stuck upon thee; volumes of report
- l60l Run with their false and most contrarious quest
- l61l Upon thy doings; thousand escapes of wit
- l62l Make thee the father of their idle dream,
- l63l And rack thee in their fancies.
- (Enter Mariana and Isabella)
- Welcome. How agreed?
- l64l Isabella SheÆll take the enterprise upon her, father,
- l65l If you advise it.
- Duke It is not my consent,
- l66l But my entreaty too.
- Isabella (to Mariana) Little have you to say
- l67l When you depart from him but, soft and low,
- l68l ôRemember now my brotherö.
- Mariana Fear me not.
- l69l Duke Nor, gentle daughter, fear you not at all.
- l70l He is your husband on a pre-contract.
- l71l To bring you thus together Ætis no sin,
- l72l Sith that the justice of your title to him
- l73l Doth flourish the deceit. Come, let us go.
- l74l Our cornÆs to reap, for yet our tilthÆs to sow.
- (Exeunt)
